Failed Spider *"Fingers '°On" Six ( 6) ContJ:ol Rods CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

Operational Mode 6, Refueling DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

During the refueling core shuffle, six (6) of the existing fifty-three (53) control rods were found to have broken spider fingers affecting eight{8) control rodlets.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE:

The cause of the broken spiders is under investigation and will be sub-mitted in a supplemental report.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE:

The Station Reactor Engineer conducted a preliminary evaluation of reacti-vity worth of the affected rodlets which showed that the shutdown margin, though reduced, was sufficient to meet Technical Specification limits.

Further safety analysis of this occurrence will be included in a supple-mental report.

CORRECTIVE ACTION:

Based on preliminary investigation, twenty-five (25) control rods have been replaced. Further corrective action required as a result of the on-going investigation will be submitt~d in a supplemental report.
