Re: Nine Mile Point Unit 2 Docket No. 50-410 On June 21, 1978, Mr. R. W. McDaughy of your staff wa's informed by telephone that. Niagara Mohawk was evaluating a condition at Nine Mile Point Unit 2 construction site which may be a reportable deficiency under 10CFR50.55(e). This condition concerned magnetic particle weld indications on .

sleeves cadwelded to the containment liner knuckle plate.

By letter dated July 21, 1978, you were informed that further information was unavailable due to a work stoppage and a report would be provided by September 30, 1978 describing our evaluation of this condition.

A three-pronged investigation into this problem is underway. Investigations are in progress on a mock-up portion of the containment liner,, sister sleeves, and production, items in the field. Since the work stoppage at Unit 2 was longer than originally anticipated, our report will not be available as previously scheduled. It is now planned that this report will be provided by December 15, 1978.
