Mr. E. E. Van Brunt, Vice President, Nuclear Projects P-SF Arizona Public Service Company 50- 5P.)

P.O. Box 21666 Phoenix, Arizona 85036 <'- 53~

Dear Mr. Van Brunt:

The Intermountain Field Operations Center, Bureau of Mines, has received copies of your letter of March 31, 1981, and Supplement 2 to the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3, Operating License Stage, Maricopa County, Arizona (ER 80/666). Our interest pertains largely to any new or clarified impacts on mineral resources and mineral industry.

Pages 2.5.1 to 2.5.4 of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's "PVNGS Units 1, 2, and 3, Environmental Report (OLS)" cover the general geology, mineral resour-ces, and expected project impacts at the site of the nuclear generating plant.

Sand, gravel, and clay are the major mineral resources presently mined in Maricopa County, although molybdenum, lime, mica, stone, copper, silver, and gold have been produced within the last 10 years. The plant itself should have little or no impact on these resources. The Nuclear Regula-tory Commission's "Final Environmental Statement, Palo Verde-Devers 500 kV Transmission Line," dated February 1979, covers final routing and impacts expected for the necessary transmission lines. The present supplement details the proposed final alignment of required pipelines. Because mineral resource information along the final alignments was not covered in the environmental statement nor in the present Environmental Report, it is sug-gested that a mineral reconnaissance and a brief impact analysis for the pipeline alignment (and transmission alignment if mineral resources were not previously covered elsewhere) be developed and incorporated in the documentation.

Sincerely yours, Jos ph B. Smith, Chief Intermountain Field Operations Center cc: Office of Environmental g ect Review U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Coo>
