UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 June 16, 1988 Docket No. 50-206 Mr. Kenneth P. Baskin Vice President Southern California Edison Company 2244 Walnut Grove Avenue Post Office Box 800 Rosemead, California 91770
Dear Mr. Baskin:
SUBJECT:
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT (TAC NO. 67758)
Re:
San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1 This is in response to your letter of May 27, 1988 in which you reported the near-final results of your review of environmental qualification of electrical equipment.
You indicate that a comprehensive re-review of all safety-related equipment which could potentially be located in a harsh environment has been performed and that this review has indicated that additional components require qualification. These components have either been qualified or replaced with qualified components and added to the Environmental Qualification Master List.
To ensure accuracy of your review, you had an independent verification performed by an outside consultant.
In addition, you state that all electrically interconnected equipment was reviewed for electrical components which could fail in a postulated harsh environment and affect the above safety-related equipment. Where potential interaction was identified, circuits were modified by electrical fuse isola tion, based on a fuse-breaker coordination analysis.
The major part of your review effort has been completed. You state that some final cable verification work should be complete by mid-June and that the unit will comply with 10 CFR 50.49 at the time it returns to service.
