Southern California Edison Company P. O BOX 800 2244 WALNUT GROVE AVENUE ROSEMEAD. CALIFORNIA 91770 K. P. BASKIN TELEPHONE MANAGER OF NUCLEAR ENGINEERING, September 24, 1980 (213) 572-1401 SAFETY, AND LICENSING Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:
D. M. Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #5 Division of Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:
Subject:
Docket No. 50-206 Failure of the Salt Water Cooling System San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated August 29, 1980, you requested further information for your review of the failure of the Salt Water Cooling System at San Onofre Unit 1 on March 10, 1980. Your letter requested information concerning time and temperature limits, equipment design limitations, desiccant contamination, and preventive maintenance programs. Further, you asked us to provide the information within 20 days of receipt of the letter, which would be September 24, 1980.
Although your letter of August 29 is prompted by an event involving the Salt Water Cooling System, the information requested by that letter is of a broad, diverse and somewhat general nature.
Assembling the required information involves input from several engineering and operating entities, followed by clarification of data and responses. Reduction of data to a reportable form, with*
reviews at various levels, consumes additional time and effort. The twenty-day response time does not allow sufficient consideration for all of these processes, both technical and administrative; therefore, the response to your August 29 letter will be submitted by October 8, 1980.
If you have any questions or desire additional information concerning the above, please contact me.
Very truly yours, as so 04V
