Re: Teleconference, Needed Information, and Updated Environmental Audit Schedule Doug, Answers to several of your information requests are provided below following the associated questions.

An additional list of information requests related to ecological issues is also attached. We're looking into the rest of the questions, along with your question on clarifying what information is needed regarding reactor and waste systems. Expect questions on SAMA by around the second week of May.

Bob - Pilgrim has rescheduled the teleconference, from today Monday 4/24 to Wednesday 4/26 at 10:00 am.

The additional information needed from the NRC/ET Team on or by Wednesday 4/26 is as follows:

  • Identify the need or not for a camera during the onsite visit.

Pilgrim can provide a camera; Entergy approval will be required before the removal of any picture (or copy) taken during the tour that will not remain at Pilgrim at the end of the audit visit. I suggest a minimum of picture taking while onsite, and limited only to those considered absolutely necessary.

John, Alicia, and I discussed this and our preference is to point out picture needs to someone on your staff to allow you to clear any pictures through your process. I would imagine we will keep this to a minimum, if any. Are there any similar issues with regard to taking photos along the transmission corridor?

  • The names of personnel from U.S. EPA, Mass. DEP, and any other agency(s) who will be coming to Pilgrim for the audit. In addition to the names, Pilgrim also needs the same type of information for each person as the information already provided for NRC/ET personnel.

Hope to have this by the 10:00 call tomorrow.

  • The names of the people who will be going on the boat tour. The maximum allowable is 8, including Entergy people (1-2). This list, including names and other information must and will be provided to the Plymouth Harbor Master, U.S. Coast Guard, and Mass. State Police to meet U.S. Homeland Security requirements. Thus, any last minute addition of

  • For the personnel (NRC, ET, and all other agencies) who will be coming to Pilgrim, Pilgrim needs to know which of the personnel will be coming to Pilgrim and going onsite (within the protected area) for the general plant tour (exterior of process buildings); these personnel will be escorted while onsite.

Plan on all staff entering protected area for general tour.

  • For the personnel (NRC, ET, and all other agencies) who will be going onsite, Pilgrim needs to know which of the personnel who will going onsite for a tour that includes the interior of process buildings that contain radiologically controlled areas (e.g. radwaste building).

These personnel will be escorted while onsite, and will have to read and information packets to be able to go on this tour; expect 30 -40 minutes (each person) to complete the read and sign information packets. Also, these personnel will be assigned dosimetry for the tour. An exit whole body count may be required after the tour but before leaving the site at the end of the audit.

1. Where exactly are the submarine ledges that are discussed on pg 2-2?
2. Why did the harvest of irish moss stop in the 1990s? What were the long-term trends? (pg 2-2)
3. Several incidences of gas bubble disease and it's effects on menhaden populations are discussed on pg 2-6. Is there a difference in the discharge between the time period of 1973-1976 and now? Does PNPS have any idea as to what caused the gas bubble disease? What monitoring programs are in place to evaluate recurrences in the discharge canal?
4. Where is the priority habitat area for the spotted turtle on the PNPS site? (pg 2-9)
5. Please indicate on a site map exactly where the screen wash is discharged to the intake embayment (pg 3-2). Why is the screen wash discharged to the discharge canal during storms? (pg 3-2). What level of storm (precipitation in inches/hr or some other metric) is the trigger for altering the screen wash discharge? Is this an automatic or manual process?
6. On pg 3-2, it is stated that molluscicides are not permitted without prior approval of EPA and MA. Is anything used besides chlorine? If so, what is the trigger for initiating the approval process? How does the approval process work? Please provide any records of usage.
7. On pg 4-10, it is stated that if fish are being impinged at a rate > 20 fish/hr, the traveling screens are operated continuously until the rate drops to below 20. How is this impingement rate determined? Manually or automatic?

Marine Ecology Studies - Report #65 (4/30/05)

1. On pg 3 of the Winter Flounder Area-Swept Estimate for Western Cape Cod Bay 2004, it is stated that estimates of winter flounder abundance were doubled to account for trawl efficiency. Do the MA DMF winter flounder abundance estimates also make this assumption?
2. Please provide the NEFSC 2003 reference cited in the first paragraph on pg 5 in the Winter Flounder Area-Swept Estimate for Western Cape Cod Bay 2004. This reference is not included in the literature cited.

316b Demonstration Report (March, 2000)

1. On pg 3-6, it is stated that a new screen wash sluicing system was installed in 1979. Why was this installed? Please provide details on the old system and the system that was installed.

6. Are any recent thermal plume maps available?
7. Is PNPS aware of other large intakes (> 50 million gal /day) and thermal discharges in the Western Cape Cod bay area? If so, does PNPS have any data from these facilities?
8. Are there any commercially or recreationally harvested shellfish beds in the vicinity of PNPS?
9. Is the applicant aware of any water, sediment or biota chemical monitoring data collected in the vicinity of the plant?
10. Please provide additional details on the intake structure including:
  • What is the intake velocity through the traveling screens?
  • What is the spray wash pressure on the screens?
  • How long is the sluice that carries the wash from the screens to the discharge point in the intake embayment? What is the travel time in this sluice? Is it covered to prevent predation?
11. Please provide additional details/schematics of the discharge location, specifically the discharge ports/jets.
12. Please provide additional details regarding the on-site sewage treatment system and leach field. Specifically performance monitoring and capacity information.
