Subject:

Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-412, License No. NPF-73 i

Response to Request for Additional 1nformation Steam Generator Alternate Repair Criteria Attached is our response to an NRC request for additional information dated November 13, 1997, concerning our license amendment request to implement the voltage based steam generator tube repair criteria. This response provides our determination of the methodology we will use to implement the voltage-based tube repair criteria and the guidance we will use concerning probe variability criteria. The ,

attachment provides both NRC items followed by our response.

Sincerely, geC_0 Sushil C. Jain c: Mr. D. S. Brinkman Sr. Psoject hlanager Mr. D. M. Kern, Sr. Resident inspector Mr.11. J. Miller, NRC Region 1 Administrator

+* ATTACllMENT Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No.1 Response to Request for AdditionalInfonnation Steam Generator Altemate Repair Criteria hLntl The NRC staff cannot complete its review of your submittal without a resiew of the methodology DLC plans to use in the imnlementation of the voltage based repair criteria.

Describe the methodology or, as an alt ..ative, confinn DLC's plan to use the probabilistic methodology as described in WCAP-14277, Revision 1, which has already been approved by the NRC staff.

Ik11NIE DLC will vec the presently approved probabilistic methodology described in WCAP 14277, Revision 1, in the implementation of the voltage based repair criteria.

hc!!l In a letter dated October 15,1996, NEl proposed revised criteria for assessing new probe variability. The revised 4.riteria is based on a review of the data used originally to support the position that only the primary frequency was required for tests on new probes to verify that they met the voltage variability specification of +/- 10%. NEl recommended that new probes be tested at both the primary and mix frequencies.

Confinn DLC's plan to follow the NEl recommendation set forth in the October 15,1996 letter. If not, provide the basis for DLC's conclusion that the original probe variability criteria is adequate.

IMINIE During implementation of voltage based repair criteria, DLC will assess new probe variability in accordance with the recommendations provided in the NEl letter dated October 15,1996.
