ARMED FORCES RADIOBIOLOGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE 8901 WISCONSIN AVENUE BETHESDA, MARYLAND 20.889-5603 November 2, 2016 Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555-0001 5'D-11/) SU8ECT: Response to NRC GENERIC LETTER 2016-01: MONITORING OF ABSORBING MATERIALS

Dear Sir or Madam:

As requested by NRC GENERIC LETTER 2016-01: MONITORING OF NEUTRON-ABSORBING MATERIALS, the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) Docket 50-170 license R-84 submits the following information:

The AFRRI does not possess a fuel storage pool or spent fuel pool, nor do we have neutron absorbing material outside of the reactor core so this generic letter does not apply. (1) Are neutron-absorbing materials used in a reactor pool, fuel storage pool, or other wet locations designed for the storage of reactor or spent fuel? NO (2) If neutron-absorbing materials are used, is their use credited in the licensing or design basis (i.e., criticality safety analysis) for the storage of reactor fuel or spent fuel in a reactor pool, fuel storage pool, or other wet locations, as applicable?

N/A (3) If neutron-absorbing materials are credited in the facility licensing or design basis for the storage of reactor or spent fuel in a reactor pool, fuel storage pool, or: other wet locations, as applicable, then provide a description of, and technical basis for, any surveillance or monitoring programs used to confirm continued acceptable performance of the neutron-absorbing materials overtime.

N/A If you need further information, please contact Mr. Steve Miller at 301-295-9245 or stephen.miller@usuhs.edu.

I declare under penalty of perjury that the foregoing is true and correct to the best of my knowledge.

Executed on November 2, 2016. MILLER.STEPH f ON:e=U5,o=U5.Government.
