01-31-79 Occurrence Date:

1-02-79 Facility:

Salem Generating Station Public Service Electric & Gas Company Hancock's Bridge, New Jersey 08038 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE:

Non-Radioactive W~ste Effluent Total Suspended Solids Exceeded Environ-mental Technical Specification Limit CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE:

- Not Applicable DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE:

During preparation of the annual non-radioactive environmental operating report, the average annual (1978) suspended solids concentration in the discharge from the non-r~dioactive waste basin was calculated to be 34.7 mg/l.

This exceeds the Environmental Technical Specification limit of 25 mg/l.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE: ~

The cause of this occurrence was ~ramlly hi~n number of demin-eralized regenerations necessary o support the~~initial flushes required for Unit 2 startup preparation and service water quench for steam genera tor bl.owdown which was used for part of 19 7 8.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE.:

Not Applicable

CORRECTIVE ACTION

During 1979, a clarifier will be in operation in the station deminer-alizer system which will reduce the number of regeneration cycles.

Design change has been submitted to modify the non-radioactive waste retention basin to allow more suspended solids to settle out before the waste water enters the treatment basin.
