I Attachment No. 1

Safety Analysis

j The Fort Calhoun Station Unit No.1 is so designed that no single failure, by itself, can adversely affect the ability of the plant to safely shutdown in case of an accident.

During the time SI-3C, the containment spray pump, was out due to motor bearing failure, the remaining two containment spray pumps SI-3A and SI-3B were operable and available. The Fort Calhoun Station's con-tainment spray system is sized such than any two of the three containment spray pumps would limit the containment pressure to below the design value following a Design Basis Accident without taking credit for the air coolers or the cooling capacity of the safety injection system.

In ad-dition, and as stated in the Technical Specifications (2.4), the contain-ment air recirculation, cooling and iodine removal system is completely redundant to the containment spray system.

During the time SI-3C was inoperable, the entire containment air recirculation, cooling and iodine removal system was operable and available should the need arise to mitigate the consequences of an accident.

Corrective Action

Maintenance Order No. 7768 was wr1tten to correct the problem of a damaged outboard motor bearing and & c ored rotor shaft (at the outboard end). The motor bearing was replaced with a spare as was the bearing seal. The scored shaft was repaired and the motor was then re-assembled and tested for proper operation per applicable sections of ST-SI/CS-1.

The test was completed satisfactorily. As a result of this failure, the operators have been cautioned to "'eck oil levels for Safety Injection and Containment Spray Pump bearings on a routine basis and prior to running any of the pumps.
