g W AStilNGT ON. O C. M 45 Jim May 7, 1970 Roger S. Boyd, Assistant Director for Boiling Water Reactors, DRL NORTHERN STATES POWr.:R COMPANY (MoNTICELLO) - DOCKET No. 50-263 We have been informed by our Region III (Chicago) Office that the program for replacement or modification of furnace sensitized stainless steel' safe ends at the Monticello reactor facility has been started. The licensee ex-pects to complete this program in two veeks. Eight safe endo are involved.

Specifically, the program consists of replacing the following cafe ends with care ends of unsensitized Type 304 stainless steel:

a. Two, four-inch jet pump instrumentation nozzle safe ends.

/

b. One, three-inch control rod drive hydraulic cystem return line safe end.
c. 'hto, six-inch head instrument nozzle safe ends.
d. One, four-inch top head vent safe end.

In addition, the interior surfaces of the two, 28-inch recirculation outlet nozzle care ends vill be clad with Type 308L stainless steel. The licensee does not plan to clad the exterior surfaces.

In accompliching the above work, the licencee ctated that the jet pump unito vill have to be partially disassembled. NSPC has informed Region III that, as a result of this disassembly, a decision has been made to replace the carburized castings in the jet pump units.

In regard to the cladding of the two recirculation outlet nozzle safe ends, it should be noted that the approach taken at Monticello (not cladding the ,

exterior surfaces) is cimilar to that taken at Dresden 3 and at Tarapur and inconsistent with the work being done at Millstone 1 and already completed at Oyster Creek and Indian Point 2 and 3 (cladding both surfaces).
