Seismic I(L) Definition See below definition.

William D. (Bill) Crouch (423) 3652004 WBN (256) 7777676 Cell The FSAR defines Seismic Category I(L) in Section 3.2.1 with examples for mechanical systems and equipment.

Other than the FSAR definition, the most complete definition in our design criteria is:

WB-DC-40-31.13 Seismic/Structural Qualification of Seismic Category I(L) Electrical and Mechanical Equipment Seismic Category I(L) - Classification given to those portions of plant features for which limited structural integrity is required during the design basis seismic events. Category I(L) items are designed and constructed to ensure achievement of their limited structural integrity requirements at all times including a concurrent SSE. The extent of this limited structural integrity is as necessary to ensure that the Category I(L) item will not cause the loss of a primary safety function of a Category I plant feature or injury to occupants of the control room.

The limited structural integrity concerns are position retention, pressure boundary retention, and seismic interaction.

Piping, pumps, valves, and other fluid system components which must retain limited structural integrity because their failure could jeopardize to an unacceptable extent the achievement of a primary safety function or because they form an interface between Seismic Category I and non-Seismic Category I plant features, are designated by TVA as Seismic Category I(L) (i.e.,

limited requirements). Those fluid containing elements which are included in Seismic Category I(L) are seismically qualified to met the intent of Position 2 of Regulatory Guide 1.29.
