SUBJECT:

UPDATE - TURBINE-DRIVEN FEEDWATER PUMP FIRE CAUSED BY LEAK IN LUBE OIL SYSTEM On March 28, 2010, the NRC was notified of a lube oil fire on one of the three reactor feedwater pumps. The plants fire brigade and offsite fire departments responded to the fire. The turbine-driven feedwater pump was manually tripped to allow the removal of the turbine lube oil system from service. The motor-driven pump, which serves as a backup for two turbine-driven feedwater pumps, started as designed and the reactor recirculation system lowered reactor power as is expected in the given conditions. The fire, which started at 6:18 p.m., was reported to be out at 9:22 p.m.

On March 30, the licensee completed inspection of the affected components and identified two potential lube oil leak sources and made the necessary repairs. The turbine-driven reactor feedwater pump has been returned to service.

The plant is in the process of returning to full power. The feedwater pump turbine is operating with no anomalies. The licensee continues to monitor for unusual conditions during power ascension.

The NRC resident inspectors continue to monitor licensee activities on site.

The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of March 31, 2010, at 8:00 a.m.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only. No further updates of the PN are planned.
