SUBJECT:
UNEXPECTED REACTOR SHUT DOWN EXCEEDING 72 HOURS DUE TOPROBLEM WITH REACTOR RECIRCULATION PUMP MOTORDESCRIPTION:
On June 29, 2007, the Perry plant was shut down to repair the motor of one of the two reactorwater recirculation pumps. The reactor recirculation pump tripped on June 27, 2007. Plant operators stabilized the plantwith the second recirculation pump continuing to run. Because the motor is located in the drywell, the licensee shut down the plant to enable workersto examine the motor.Plant staff is continuing to investigate the reason for the pump motor trip.
The utility is replacing the defective motor with a new motor they have in storage.
The plant will remain shut down until the problem is fixed.
NRC resident inspectors are monitoring the situation.
The plant's shut down has been covered by local media outlets.CONTACTS:Bruce BurgessRodney Clagg630/829-9629630/829-9608
