Facility Licensee Emergency Classification Perry Nuclear Power Plant Notification of Unusual Event FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company Alert Perry, OH Site Area Emergency Docket No.: 05000440 General Emergency License No.: NPF-58 X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS DUE TO A LOSS OF FEEDWATER On October 20, 2014, at 0218 EDT, the Perry Nuclear Power Plant automatically shutdown from 100 per cent power during preparations for shifting the electrical power supply of a nonsafety-related component. The activity resulted in an unplanned shutdown of the main feedwater pumps which resulted, as designed, in a reactor scram. All safety-related equipment responded as designed. The licensee re-aligned equipment to bypass the suspect component and its investigation of the cause of the problem is ongoing. The licensee is planning to restart the reactor; the realignment of equipment will not affect plant safety nor degrade plant operations.

Region III received initial notification of this occurrence when the licensee called the Senior Resident Inspector on October 20, 2014, shortly after the reactor shutdown. The Senior Resident Inspector responded to the plant to review the shutdown and the resident inspectors are closely monitoring the licensees investigation of the cause of the loss of feedwater and the subsequent preparations to restart the reactor.

The State of Ohio has been notified.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only.

The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 0820 EDT on October 24, 2014.
