UNUSUAL EVENT DECLARED AT PERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT AFTER CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS ALARMED IN THE RADWASTE BUILDING CONTROL ROOM DESCRIPTION:

An Unusual Event was declared at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant on November 28, 2012, at 10:19 a.m. EST, after Carbon Monoxide detectors alarmed in the Radwaste Building Control Room. Carbon Monoxide detectors alarmed due to a leak from an acetylene bottle. Acetylene is a gas that is commonly used in welding activities. The gas was confined to the Radwaste Building Control Room.

All personnel had to leave the Radwaste Building Control Room until levels decreased. The plants staff vented the area and took air samples to ensure acceptable levels for habitability.

No injuries were reported. This issue had no impact on plant operation. Perry Nuclear Power Plant remained at full power.

The NRC resident inspectors monitored the event from the control room and were in communication with NRC Region III and Headquarters staff.

The State of Ohio has been informed.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated.

Region III received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the on-site NRC resident inspectors at 10:22 a.m. EST, on November 28, 2012. The site exited the Unusual Event at 2:52 p.m. EST. The NRC remained in the normal mode of operation throughout this event. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 1:30 p.m. EST, on November 29, 2012.
