No: IV-13-032 October 8, 2013 CONTACT: Lara Uselding (817) 200-1519 Victor Dricks (817) 200-1128 NRC Postpones Public Meeting on Diablo Canyon Because of Government Shutdown Due to the ongoing government shutdown, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has postponed the public meeting scheduled for Oct. 16 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the agencys performance assessment for the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The plant, located near San Luis Obispo, is operated by Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

The federal shutdown began Oct. 1, the start of the new fiscal year, due to a lapse of appropriations from Congress. The NRC has continued to operate on unexpended funds from previous appropriations but expects its funds to run out by Oct. 10. Should it be necessary at that time, the agency will begin scaled-down operations focusing on immediate public safety and security issues. For more information about the effect of the partial government shutdown on NRC operations, see the agency blog.

The status of rescheduled meetings will be updated on the agencys Public Meetings Schedule on the NRC website. Once it is rescheduled, a press release announcing the public meeting would also be issued.
