No: IV-16-017 August 26, 2016 CONTACT: Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC Names New Senior Resident Inspector at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected Christopher Newport as the new Senior Resident Inspector at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Chris technical experience and regulatory perspective will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission to protect people and the environment by ensuring the safe operation of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant, said NRC Region IV Administrator Kriss Kennedy.

Newport joined the NRC in 2008 as a project engineer in the Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa., and was the Resident Inspector at the Seabrook nuclear power plant in Seabrook, N.H. He served in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear submarine officer and holds a bachelors degree in control systems engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a masters degree in engineering management from Catholic University.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear power plant has at least two Resident Inspectors. Newport joins Resident Inspector John Reynoso at Diablo Canyon. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring significant work projects, and interacting with plant workers and the public.
