Victor Dricks (817) 860-8128 E-Mail: OPA4.Resource@nrc.gov Lara Uselding (817) 276-6519 NRC MONITORS ALERT AT DIABLO CANYON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff is monitoring an Alert issued at Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant following the release of carbon dioxide in one room of the Unit one turbine building.

The inadvertent release occurred during testing of the fire suppression system. The affected room was immediately sealed off following the incident. No one was injured and there is no current threat to the public as a result of this accident.

The NRC resident inspectors are on site to oversee the licensees actions in response to the event. The plants two units are in normal operating mode.

An Alert is the second lowest of four emergency classifications. Pacific Gas and Electric Company declared the Alert at 10:56 a.m. Central Time following the release of the carbon dioxide.
