FPL St. Lucie Capture Sumary 2010.xls

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2010. In

October, we captured eleven (11) Caretta caretta, fourteen (14) Chelonia

mydas and one (1)

Eretmochelys imbricata in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant

on Hutchinson Island.

During the month there were two turtles transported to rehabilitation

facilities.

On October 27th, a sub-adult loggerhead was hand captured in the intake canal with a 9-cm long

impact fracture of the shell. The wound was necrotic and left the body

cavity exposed. The

turtle's injuries are consistent with a boat strike and were determined

to be non-causal to power

plant operations. The animal was transported to the Marinelife Center (MLC) in Juno Beach by

MLC staff after consultation with personnel from FWCC.

On October 28th, another sub-adult loggerhead was hand captured with boat related injuries.

This turtle had 4 large prop scars on the posterior carapace which were

beginning to heal.

Additionally, the animal was severely underweight and lethargic. Inwater

Research Biologists

met Sea World staff in Vero Beach to facilitate the transfer of the

animal to their rehab facility in

Orlando. This was also determined to be a non-causal event, unrelated to

power plant

operations.

Throughout the month of October the temporary barrier net experienced light loads of algae and

jellyfish that entered into the intake canal. This temporary barrier

has effectively kept turtles

from moving further down the canal. A permanent fix to this net is

expected in 2011.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all the turtles are attached.

Also attached is the

spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events

delineated by species and

month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes

incurred on captured

turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
