Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary September 2009

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for September 2009. In September, we captured twenty three (23) Caretta caretta , and eight (8) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. On September 14, a ju venile green turtle was captured and found to be lethargic and underweight with no injuries or abnormalities. This turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for treatment after consultation with FFWCC personnel. On September 23, a juvenile loggerhead was captured and found with monofilament lin e that wrapped and severe d the entire left front flipper. Fishing line was also protruding from the mouth and cloaca. This turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation after consultation with personnel from FFWCC. Both events were considered not causal to power pl ant operation. All other turtles captured in September were released on the same day of capture.

Tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles are attached. Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2009. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks the fresh scrapes that have occurred on captured turtles and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project. If you have any questions or comments about the enclosed data please contact me at your convenience.
