NMP/Fitz -Cancer Risk Study Date: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 12:21:21 PM Scott -just curious, are there any separate RES or related SOARCA activities associated w/this NAS effort? I copied it from today's NRC in the News.Nine Mile Point, FitzPatrick Plants To Be Part Of Cancer Risk Study On its website, NPR affiliate, WRVO-Radio Oswego, New York (4/13, Benjamin) reported,"Oswego County's three nuclear reactors would be part of a proposed national study on the cancer risk nuclear power plants may pose to their surrounding communities." The NRC has asked the National Academy of Sciences to update a "1990 study that focused mainly on cancer death rates. The new study would look at all diagnosed cases of cancer near nuclear power plants." According to NRC PAO Neil Sheehan, the NRC "will look at the results of the new study to determine if any regulatory action is needed. 'If cancer rates around a particular plant are noticeably high than around other plants then obviously that's something the Federal government will want to take a closer look at,' said Sheehan. 'If the numbers turn out to be inconsequential than follow up may not be necessary." Thanks, Rich Guzman Sr. Project Manager NRR/DORL US NRC 301-415-1030 Richard.Guzman@nrc.gov
