Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected Meghan Thorpe-Kavanaugh as the new resident inspector at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant, located near Two Rivers, Wis.

The nuclear power facility is operated by NextEra Energy Point Beach, LLC.

Each commercial nuclear power plant site in the United States has at least two resident inspectors who monitor day-to-day operations at the plant. Thorpe-Kavanaugh joins Senior NRC Resident Inspector Stephen Burton at the Point Beach facility.

Meghan Thorpe-Kavanaughs background and regulatory experience will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants, said Region III Administrator Mark Satorius.

A native of Oshkosh, Wis., Thorpe-Kavanaugh received her bachelors degree in physics and business administration from Ripon College in 2003. She completed a masters degree in nuclear engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic University in 2004.

Following graduation, she joined the NRC in 2004 as part of the Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program at its Rockville, Md., headquarters, graduating in 2006. She served as a qualified project manager in the Division of Operating Reactor Licensing in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, she was selected as reactor engineer in NRCs Region III office in Lisle, Ill.

After successfully completing the agencys inspector qualification program, she served as acting resident inspector at Point Beach and later at Braidwood Nuclear Power Station in Illinois.
