NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.07-095 July 31, 2007 NRC STAFF APPROVES TRANSFER OF POINT BEACH OPERATING LICENSE The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has approved the transfer of the operating license for the Point Beach Nuclear Plant from owner Wisconsin Electric Power Company and operator Nuclear Management Company, to new owner FPL Energy Point Beach, LLC. As provided by NRC regulations, the staff's approval of the transfer is effective July 31, contingent on the licensee receiving certain regulatory and judicial approvals.

Wisconsin Electric Power Company and Nuclear Management Company submitted an application on Jan. 26, requesting approval of the license transfer. Major issues considered by the NRC included financial and technical qualifications, as well as transfer and maintenance of accumulated decommissioning funds. The license transfer also authorizes FPL Energy Point Beach to store spent fuel at Point Beachs Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation.

A copy of the NRC's approval order and accompanying non-proprietary safety evaluation report will be placed in the NRC's Public Document Room, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Room O-1 F23, Rockville, MD 20852 (telephone 1-800-397-4209 or 301-415-4737). The non-proprietary safety evaluation will also be available on the NRCs Agency-wide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS), by entering ML071560124 at this address:

http://adamswebsearch.nrc.gov/dologin.htm. Help in using ADAMS is available by calling the Public Document Room.
