SUMMARY

OF PERFORMANCE AND FINANCIAL INFORMATION FOR FISCAL YEAR 2009 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its report, NRC Summary of Performance and Financial Information, Fiscal Year 2009. This report summarizes the NRCs performance to protect people and the environment through the regulation of nuclear power and use of nuclear material.

This report provides key financial and performance information for Congress and the American people to assess how well we have carried out our mission. Protecting public health and safety, promoting common defense and security, and protecting the environment are critical both to the public we serve and the licensees we regulate, said Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko.

In FY 2009, the NRC provided effective and efficient oversight of 104 nuclear power plants across the country. The agency emphasized strengthening the interrelationships among safety, security and emergency preparedness. In addition, NRC reviewed the critical safety aspects of new reactor designs, environmental site issues and applications for new nuclear power plants. The NRC continued to focus on the safe and secure use of nuclear materials through effective oversight of operating nuclear fuel processing facilities, uranium recovery sites, decommissioning sites and nuclear material user licensees. In addition, the agency reviewed new applications for enrichment facilities and uranium recovery, to ensure that public health, safety and the environment continue to be protected.
