No: 24-020 March 19, 2024 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC, Idaho National Lab to Hold April 4 Kickoff Event for Collaboration on Codes and Standards for Advanced Reactor s

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Idaho National Laboratory are hosting a hybrid event April 4 to kick off a coordinated effort focused on leveraging consensus codes and standards to support deployment of new and advanced reactor technologies.

The goal of our collaboration is to proactively identify codes and standards applicable to an array of non-traditional reactor designs, said NRC Chair Christopher T. Hanson. This effort will help make the NRCs licensing and oversight of these technologies timelier and more efficient.

NRC Chair Hanson and INL Director John Wagner will provide opening remarks. The event will bring together government and industry leaders, including officials from the NRC and INL, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, American Society of Mechanical Engineers,

American Nuclear Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and several advanced reactor vendors.

The group will examine what consensus codes and standards would best foster efficient design and licensing and potentially drive down the cost of construction and operation of next-generation reactors.

The meeting will be held from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Eastern time in the auditorium of NRC headquarters at 11555 Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland, and will be accessible online via Microsoft Teams. Participants must register to attend either in -person or virtually.
