The San Onofre Nuclear Generating St: tion, San.L3 ego County and another area in Grange County, Califcrnia, were visi;ed July 28 by E.- H. Saltz and R. F. Yerkes (USGS); leonard Murphy (C ar.d GS); A. T. Cardone, R. A.

l 31rkel, and R. 3. Minogue (AEC Regulatory Staff); J. Hard and Een P&;e

{

(ACRS); and O. Ortesa, P. West, G. Hunt and consultants (Southern I

California Edison Co. ).

On July 29, a nceting was held in the offices l

s l

of Southern California Edison to view and discuss geophysical data on marine Geology of the Dana Point-San Onofre region pre;ared for the applicant by Marine Advisors, Inc.

l The field examination of the sea cliffs and trenched exposures at San Onofre Bluffs supports the applicants' conclusions in various p rts of the PSAR that the bedrock San Mateo Formation is not faul;cd c; the site proposed for units 2 and 3, and th:2 the latest movenants on the Cristianitos fault, about 3,000 feet souuneast of the c. e, occurred before the deposition of the sand, silt, and gravel deposits that cap the bedrock of the coastal terrace in this vicinity. According to the applicant (PSAR, Appendix 2A, p. 22) foscil marine shells from near the base of the terrace deposits 4.5 miles south of the site are more than 33,000 years old, by carbon-14 dating. Field exami_ tion of the fossil locality indicated that articulated pelecypod shells and ur. dica 3ed fragile Eastropod shells occur in a gravely lens near the base of the terrace deposits, apparently in sitt and not reworked frca oldar deposits.

At the Plano Trabuco excavation, about 16 miles north of San Cnofre along the trend of the Cristiani;os fault, stream-terrace dcposius lie undisturbed across a fault exposed by trenching.

According to the PSAR (Appendix 2A, p. 22) the c;e of the im.eer part of those terrace deposits is more than 32,600 years, on thc t.'sia of carbon-a4 datir.g.

However, accordin6 to the applicant, the f ul ct this locality is only one branch, or part, of the Cristiani;os fault, sad its relation to other parts of the fault has not been demonstrated.
