Dear Jim:
A copy of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) questions sent to the Southern California. Edison Company (SCEC) for the purpose of obtaining more information needed to complete our review of the San Onofre 2 and 3 Nuclear Generating Station-(SONGS) are enclosed for your information.
I
-The questions are a compilation of coments and concerns expressed by NRC staff, Burt Slemmons (NRC Consultant), the U. S. Geological Survey, and by you and your staff. Where the questions from these different organizations are not. incorporated verbatim in the official list of NRC questions, we do believe that the intent and spirit of all of the questions and coments received by NRC are reflected in.the final list of official NRC questions.
We have taken this approach to avoid redundancy in questions.
If we have g
failed to indicate to the SCEC any serious concerns of yours or your staff, l
we will correct or supplement our questions upon notification by you or your staff. We welcome your active interest and participation.in our review of the SONGS for the operating license.
t Sincerely, I

I Please find enclosed a copy of the Geosciences Branch input to the 1
Safety Evaluation Report for SONGS 2 & 3.
This input, along with typo-1 graphical corrections and additions based on your. latest letter will be incorporated into a published version which is reviewed by attorneys.
It l
l should be issued in several weeks. This copy is for your use and information j
and.should not be distributed.
j Your input and thorough review has been instrumental in our ability to l
conclete this effort and we thank you for your assistance. We anticipate t
an Aavisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards subcolmiittee meeting (ACRS) i during February somewhere in the site area. This will be similar to the GETR meeting you attended in Sunol, California. We will contact you with specifics about this meeting when they are available.
We would like to extend our best wishes for the holiday season and thank you for both your patience and guidance. We will be looking forward to

Dear Doc:
Please find enclosed the studies I referred to in our conversation several weeks ago. Burt's letter, done for us as part of the San Onofre 2 & 3 site review, incorporates many interesting views'for consideration. The probabilities studies done for G.E. Test Reactor are the first done for assessing surface offset potential near a critical facility. Phil Justus I
of the branch also suggests that you consider relationships between coseismic I
of and afterslip in your fault considerations.
'/
I hope you find this information useful in the development of Appendix F for ICSSC. I hope to see you soon.

Dear Jim:
y i Mi l
On August 11, 1980, you forwarded to me a memorandum requesting fur er review by the NRC of the Cristianitos fault zone as it related to the seismic hazard it might pose to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
l As a result of your concern as well as our own continuing review process we have aggressively pursued the review of this question. As a result, the applicant provided additional new information which we have reviewed with the assistance of the U. S. Geological Survey and Dr. Burt Slensnons.
We have now completed our review of all available infonnation and have issued a NRC Safety Evaluation Report relating to the seismic and geologic aspects of San Onofre Units 2 & 3.
I have enclosed several copies for your use.
Included in this report is an extensive review of the infonnation relating to the Cristianitos fault zone as well as other aspects of the total site review.
On January 31, 1980 a subcommittee of the Advisory Cognittee on Reactor Safeguards will convene to initiate their review of San Onofre 2 & 3.
This meeting will be held in Los Angeles at the Best Western Airport Park Hotel beginning at 8:30 a.m.
I hope that you and other interested members of your staff will be able to attend.
Since initiation of our review of San Onofre, we have made every effort to maintain a close relationship with the California Division of Mines and Geology.
We feel that this relationship has been excellent and of great assistance to us in accomplishing a very comprehensive review of this site. We hope that the interaction with us has also contributed to your overall agency goals.
I greatly appreciate your continued interest and I will look forward to seeing you later this month.
Sincerely,
