FROM:
Edward L. Jordan, Director Division of Emergency Preparedness and Engineering Response Office of Inspection and Enforcement
SUBJECT:
OPERATIONAL IMPACT OF 10 CFR 50.72 REP.0RTING REQUIREMENTS
1;gi:
This refers to two memoranda, one dated March 19, 1985, from C. E. Norelius and the other dated April 3, 1985, from D. F. Kirsch.
We understand and appreciate the concerns raised in these memoranda.
We agree that it would be useful to eliminate the reporting of events with relatively litcle safety significance, if the reporting criteria of $50.72 can be modified without inadvertently eliminating desired reports. We will review the criteria in S50.72 to determine what criteria in the rule might be changed to eliminate unnecessary reports.
Eric Weiss on my staff has been assigned the task of developing alternatives for the rule.
Before beginning a formal rulemaking process, we will send these alternatives to the Regions and affected NRC offices for rev.iew and comment.
We plan to complete this effort in calendar year 1985.
