I DISTRIBUTION:
01 6 SEP 181984 DE:GSB Rdg. File MEMORANDUM FOR:
J. P. Knight, Assistant Director for Components & Structures Engineering Division of Engineering FROM:
Stephan Brocoum, Acting Chief Geosciences Branch Division of Engineering
SUBJECT:
GEOSCIENCES BRANCH INPUT FOR RESPONSE TO LETTER FROM JONATHAN McHUGH TO CHAIRMAN PALLADIN0 In his questions numbered 4 and 9, Mr. McHugh raised the issue of using a 50 year peak acceleration due to earthquakes for analysis of Diablo Canyon.
The staff has not conducted its own probabilistic analysis for the recurrence of earthquake ground motions for the Diablo Canyon site. We have, however, looked at the available probabilistic estimates made by others for the Diablo Canyon area. The results of these estimates provide a range of peak ground accelerations with return periods of 50 years. This range of peak ground accelerations is from about 0.079 to g
about 0.2g.
The uncertainty in the estimates is evidenced by its range of a factor of about 3 in these average values.
Please note that the return period is not meant to be used in a strict time-predictive sense (only one exceedence exactly every 50 years) but rather as the average time interval between exceedences over a very long timeframe.
If there is any further information we.can provide on this issue, please contact Dr. Robert L. R)thman (492-8217).
