INSTAU.ATION OF INTEGPAL CON 0ti!T SMOKE SEALS AT APPENDIX BARRIERS (TACa 675?3) PILGRIM NUCLEAR PNER STATION
Dear Mr. Pird:
Ry letter dated February 3,1988 MECo 88 017), you provided the NRC staff with criteria for installing smoke seals inside electrical conduits that pass throuch fire barriers from one fire area to another.
The criteria was provided in response to the staff concerns discussed during a meeting between RECo and the staff on November 24, 1987 We have completed our review of your February 3,1987 submittal and agree that the criteria REco has developed conforms to the staff guidance and requirements.
The criteria is adequate to provide reasonable assurance that smoke generated by a fire in one fire area will not travel by way of electrical condeit to another fire area in sufficient cuantities to damage redundant safety shutdown equinment and/or components.
Therefore, we consider this item and Tac number 67523 closed.
We have e.':losed a copy of our Safety Evaluation for your infonnation.
