SUPPLEMENT TO SAFETY EVALUATICN REPORT ON AUTOMATIC SHUNT TRIP -

SALEM ATWS ITEM 4.3 (LICENSING ACTION TAC 53166)

By letter dated November 8,1984, we issued the Safety Evaluation (SE) on the subject matter for Beaver Valley Unit 1. You responded to open items in that SE by letters dated January 14 and May 10, 1985.

We have reviewed your letters and find that your proposed design modifications for the automatic shunt trip and bypass breaker position indication acceptable. Details may be found in the enclosed Supplemental '

Safety Evaluation (SSE). We have not addressed the seismic qualification of shunt trip components since you have not yet submitted information for our review. This remains an open item. Please provide that information within 30 days of receipt of this letter.

In accordance with Generic Letter 85-09, you are to " submit any needed Technical Specification change requests as soon as practical following staff review and approval of the modified design". Detailed guidance for preparing these specifications may be found in the Generic Letter. Please discuss with your Project Manager, Mr. Peter Tam, your target date for the submittal.

Certain items such as the installation of bypass breaker position indication, are subje t to post-implementation confinnation by Region I. These are 1so described in the SSE.
