The purpose of this Calculation is to determine if stem growth is sufficient to preclude this valve from performing its safety related function.

This is due to the temperature changes between the inside and outside of the valve body. The temperature inside the valve has been increased to 561"F and outside the valve body is 65 F. (Ref.1) 2.0 Methodology The computer sonware program MathCad 5.0 will be used for this calculation and will be treated as a hand calculation.

The methodology for calculating the thrust required to open an MOV subject to thermal binding due to stem growth is based upon calculating the increase in seating thmst due to thermal elongation of the stem. This is done by calculating the free thermal growth of the stem, and then '

using the stiffness of the valve / actuator assembly to convert the change in length to a change in seating thrust. The unseating thrust under the~ thermal binding load is then calculated by l multiplying the thermally bound seating thrust by the ratio of the normal unseating thmst to the I normal seating thmst. The calculations are done using the design inputs as follows:

A. Valve / Actuator Assembly Stiffness Under Thmst Loadine The stem is assumed to move at a constant rate of speed with a constant rate ofincrease in thmst during the period between seating and control switch trip during valve testing. The motor speed during this period is assumed to be known. Then, the stem speed can be calculated from:

The motor speed is assumed to be given in revolutions per minute.

The rate ofload increase is calculated directly from the measured values of thmst and time.

C. _Slem Eloncation Due to Thermal Expansion The amount of stem elongation due to thermal expansion is calculated by the familiar L x a x aT equation. The stem travel is used as L due to the fact that this the only portion of the total shaft length that sees a change in temperature.

D. Total Force Reauised to Overcome Thermal Bindine Due to Stem Growth The total thrust which is holding the valve closed is now calculated as the sum of the thmst due to normal closing plus the additional thrust due to stem thermal growth.

Final Thrust = Max a , + Stem Elongation x Stiffness The final value for unseating thrust isjust the ratio of the normal unseating thrust to the normal closing thmst times the thermally bound closing thrust.

Final Unseating Thrust = Unseating Ratio x Final Thrust The acceptance criteria recommended for use in this calculation is that the available motor operator thmst capability be at least 120% of that thmst required to unseat the MOV under thermal binding conditions. The 20% margin is provided to allow for uncertainty in the measurements used to calculate the stiffness and the unseating ratio as well as other effects such as valve - to - valve and motor actuator - to - motor actuator variations. All of these effects are random in nature.

The available motor thmst is 26,667 lbf. (Ref. 2).

l 3.0 Assumptions A. Stem Motion The valve stem moves at a constant rate of speed with a constant rate ofincrease in thmst during the period between seating and control switch trip during valve testing. l B. Motor Soeed The motor speed during the period between seating and control switch trip during valve testing is assumed to be known in revolutions per minutg (rpm).
