A. J. Turanski, Environmental Engineer St.fE TOUR The site tour was divided into two parts, the first involved the CPU per-ma===1 and consisted of a review of the shipworm activities as seen by boat along the discharge canal. Untreated wood along the canal showed consider-able shipworn evidence and included the first several private boat slips along the lagoons beyond the commercial marinas toward the Bay. Treated wood was seen to slow the shipworn activity. The stump removal operations osedseted by the contractor (Farker), were reviewed and were estimated to re-quire another week to finish. JCP&L perossoal reported that they were having diffiemity in obtaining the necessary permits from the Army Corps of Engineers to backfill the beaks aloeg Oyster Creek with rock for stab-ilisatima.
(In the areas of eedar summy, this backfilling is aise aseessary to eever exposed wood to prevent exposure to future shipworn activity.
In these areas, ese stump abutta amether until well away from the discharge canal.) EP-4 said they would talk to the Army Corps in regard to this.

In the==aa=J phase of the tour the ERC persommel, without GPU secompani-meat, visited each of the three marians bought by JCF&L and talked indiv-ideally with Mr. Kierts - eyster Creek Marina Mr. Baumgarten - Sands Point Marina-l Mr. DiFale - Briar Wood Basia Each was asked (1) Do all your easteners have berths for their beats this yeart (2) Are you willing er som you operate your marina for this seasont (3) Are you aware of any serious seememie problems in the sammunity as a result of the marina saleet i
1.
The answer to the first gneettee was: About 95% of the best eumers had made arrangements for beething their beats this season. These not making arrangements apparently did not try. Most of the customers i
preferred not to leave haa==== as the marina operators said, "they (the latter) had the best marinas and services in the area." They also said these boat oumers probably " bumped" some other customers from j
their berths at other marinas.
2.
All of the marina operators said they were unwilling to operate their j
l marinas another season. Several reasons were given by all.
(a) Con-siderable repair had to be done to get the marinas through the season.
j NRC personnel verified the damage to the pilings and docks currently j
standing.
(b) The liability risks were too great to operate the marinas without the repairs.
(c) Most had already committed or sold i
their equipment to other marinas.
(d) At this date most of their i
+
customers had new berthing arrangements for the season, hence, no I
d customers.
3.
The marina operators said they thought that some of the businesses in the area would suffer from the loss of the marinas. They mened Makay's superette and Liguer Store as the ese place that made the loudest moises j
fa this regard, but aise meetiesed several local bars and restrauants.
j With regard to Makay's, one of the marina operators pointed out that while crying hardship, the emner is opening a second leasties in Waretown, so that, business saamet be that bed. The NBC talked briefly with a i
slerk at Meksy's. He 1sdicated that he expoeted to be hurt but not to the point of going out of business. The marina operators also stated that many businesses in the area had empended withis the last souple of years in amtlaipatism of lets of cemetraction workers from the Forked River site. gimes this been't materialised yet, some of these businesses are already hurting because of their increased investments and debts.
