Dear Mr. Coller:

SUBJECT : OYSTER CRE'iK NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET #.50-219 LIQUID AND SOLID RAIT4ASTE MODIFICATION COST AND SCHEDULE. REVISION On September 20, 1973, we submitted a report entitled " Preliminary Description and Analyses of Proposed Modifications to 1.he Gaseous, Liquid and Solid Radioactive Waste Treatment Systems for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station". This prelininary description was followed by an October 16, 1973 letter which affirmed that we would submit an FSAR amend-nent for the Liquid and Solid Radioactive Uaste System Modification by December 15, 1974.

With respect to the Liquid and Solid System Modification, your lettier dated }brch 5, 1974 indicated that the systems, as described, were accept-able and that you had no additional questions. The detailed design has progressed on this basis.

We have recently completed a refined cost estimate for the Liquid and Solid System Modification reflecting the design details which have been developed to date and present market conditiona. The results indicate that the costs will be much greater than t.he preliminary estimates had predicted. The extent of this cosc increase is such that we have been forced to reevaluate the current design with the object of reducing over-

.all project costs. The redesign effort will consider optimization of con-struction nethods, :naximum utilization of existing equipment and building space, material selections in light of current costs and ava11 abilities, and simplification of system designs, t

' Consequently,' it will' not be possible to submit a Liquid and Solid System FSAR amendment on December 15, 1974, as our letter of October 16, I

1973 had indicated. A revised date for FSAR. submittal.will be previded-l to the Commission no later than December 2,1974. At that time, we will

'also advise you of any anticipated ' schedule changes, and we will describe any modification to the preliminar descriptions previously approved-by your office which may result from the redesign' effort.

4 At your request, we would be pleased to.mest with you and members of l

your staff to discuss in more detail our plans and the status of our

,n redesign. efforts.

t Very truly yours,
