. REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE FROM HASL Recent infonnation has shown that there has been a-buildup of radioactivity in sediment in the discharge canal at the_0yster Creek Nuclear. Power Plant, Forked River, N.J.

The concentration

'or raaionucnaes in tne sediments has been fairly well docu-:

mented from measurements by the licensee, the State of New Jersey i

and EPA.

1 This matter is of some concern to the local marina owners and users in the area with regard to 1) possible dredging operations and the radiation levels from the resultant spoils banks and 2) radiation 7-1evels to-individuals residing on boats in the discharge canal for extended periods.

.There has been no dredging in the discharge canal since the p.lant 9'*-

^1

' began operating so the first concern is not acute.

However, with 1

regard to the latter concern, we believe it would be beneficial to make some measurements'of the radiation levels aboard boats in the canal, if possible, and at the surface of the canal water.

4 The instrument of choice would appear to be a pressurized-ioniza-tion chamber.

Since Regulation does not have such instruments readily available and HASL has considerable experience from field measurements with this type of instrumentation and is located in

close proximity to Oyster Creek, we request that HASL be authorized to make these measurements for Regulatory. We estimate this will require about one day of field work. An inspector from our regional office, who is familiar with the site, will be made available to

-assist HASL in making necessary arrangements.
