Dear Congressman Mrarek:

In your letter of January 4,1983, to Chairman Palladino you requested that this agency's hearings involving the Shoreham nuclear facility be conducted in Suffolk County. New York.

As you are aware, the public hearings on the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant resumed on January 10, 1983, in Suffolk County, N.Y.

It is not presently

contemplated that the hearings will be moved away from Suffolk County again.

The hearings on the application for an operating license for Shoreham began on May 4,1982 in Suffolk County, and were held continuously in Suffolk County throughout the sunner and earl autumn.

The hearings were moved from Long Island to Washington, D.C.. on1 for the period Octob.er 12, 1982 until the end of 1982. This was done to a low the Licensing Board to work on this and other matters in their offices, and to relieve them of the burdens of transporting to Long Island the voluminous documents related to the quality assurance matters that were being litigated during this period.

Very few members of the public had been visiting the hearings, and none of the parties actively participating in the hearings on this matter, including Suffolk County, whose attorneys' offices are in Washington, D.C., ob.iected to this j

move.
