Sulfur Removal From Reactor Coolant System Surfaces at TMI f1 Thank you fer your letter of July 23, 1982. You expressed concern that sufficient effort is not being focused by GPUN on sulfur removal from system surfaces at TMI #1. We concur with your recommendation that "if GPUN does not intend to desulfbrize, that they be required to present argu-ments to support their positten." Neuever, we will aise requi m GPUM to present data to support the viability of desulfbrization because the staff is apprehensive about the corrosion asper.t of 4esulfkrization. To resolve our conceres. GPtRI is condmeting tests of takes ressved from the steam generators to determine the necessity and viability for desulfkrization.

GPUN has retained luss to coordinate these efforts.

The studies to date by both GFINS and the staff have been focused on the steam generator repair technignes hosesse that effort is on the critical pesa. A meeting is testatively scheduled fbe August 19, 1982, for GPUN to present their final piene for the steen generator repair efforts. Assuming GPP4's steen generater 1r plans are acceptable to us. repairs will start about the first of

We have fbruuded Jour letter and attachoests to GPUN for consideration in their desulfkrizatten program. Fellowing the steen generator repair meeting with GPUN on Ampst 19. 1982 us will have a meetiteg with our consultants to review the details of the SPN plans for restart. One of the major topics to be discussed in that meeting will he desulfurization..We look forward to seeing you at the August 19 meeting; we will confirm the date of this meeting by phone.
