Grand Gulf Nuclear Station - Unit 1 Docket No.:

50-416 On August 6, 1982, the fire detection zone 2-10 went into an alarm condition and would not clear. A fire watch was established by operations.

This condition has been encountered several times since the system was placed into service.

Zone 2-10 includes the flame detectors in the HPCS D/G room and the ionization smoke detectors in the corridor between the D/G building and the Auxiliary building. Each time this zone has gone into an alarm condition and would not clear it was found that the ionization detector needed to be cleaned.

Investigation revealed that diesel exhaust fumes are drifting into the corridor and contaminating the ionization detector. For this reason a design change request has been submitted to change the ionization detectors to flame detectors which are not sensitive to dust or fumes. Upon completion of the change out, a followup report will be submitted.
