Dear Sirs:

Subject:

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)

Units 1, 2, and 3, Docket Nos. STN 50-528/529/530 Status of PVNGS Activities Associated with the Resolution of Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers".

Arizona Public Service Company (APS) has been actively pursuing completion of the activities described in References 1 and 2 associated with the resolution of Generic Letter 92-08, "Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers." We are pleased to inform you that our scheduled completion date for these activities has been revised from the end of the first quarter of 1998 to December 31, 1997. This improvement in the schedule was accomplished because work to remove fire barriers in the remote shutdown rooms of each Unit, which was originally scheduled to be completed during Unit outages by the end of the first quarter of 1998, has been successfully performed on-line. A status of the remaining actions is described below.

U, S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Page 2 The upgrade of Thermo-Lag 330-1 barriers that will be credited in the Fire Hazard Analysis is now greater than 75% complete in the field. This work is currently on-schedule and will be completed by the end of the third quarter of 1997.

The Unit-specific ampacity evaluations for Thermo-Lag 330-1 enclosed raceways for Units 2 and 3 are also on-schedule and will be completed by December 31, 1997 as previously committed in Reference 2.

The completion of the above items will resolve the issues regarding Thermo-Lag 330-1 installations at PVNGS. It is our understanding that the NRC staff is reviewing our determination that Thermo-Lag 330-1 is acceptable for use as a radiant heat shield in containment as described in Reference 3, as well as our methodology for performing cable ampacity calculations which was described in Reference 4. We believe the approaches taken on these two issues are technically sound and demonstrate acceptable resolution of these issues. Therefore, the schedule for resolution of Generic Letter 92-08 does not include any further activities associated with these issues.

Please contact Mr. Scott Bauer at (602) 393-5978 if you have any questions or comments.

Sincerely, JML/SAB/RMW/rlh cc: E. W. Merschoff K. M. Thomas PVNGS Sr. Resident K. E. Perkins
