PRESSURIZED THERMAL SHOCK TO REACTOR PRESSURE VESSELS SAN ONOFRE 1 We have reviewed your letter-dated October 5, 1981, regarding Pressurized Thermal Shock to Reactor Pressure Vessels.

Your letter.

indicated that you will not fully respond to the 60-day request of our letter of August 21, 1981.

We have identified the following diffierences between our request and your *intended response.

a. Item 3 concerning a RT limit will be provided as~soon as it is made available by tTWestinghouse Owners Group work, which IS not scheduled for completion until the end of 1981.

The 60-day response will be delayed 15 days and will be provided by November 4, 1981..

The safety question related to pressurized thermal shock is being carefully analyzed by theNNRC staff. The request is oriented to developing a resolution of this issue by next summer (1982).- The information which we requested in our. August 21, 1981.letter to be

  • submitted within 60 days and 150 days is an important part of the tot-a.l effort. We will accept what you can provide at the time provided in your letter and acknowledge your commitments as identi fied in a. and b. above. We will continue our program of developing appropriate requirements and..note your failure to provide all of -the requested information-may give us less opportunity to avoid the necessity of specifying conservatisms where more definitive.-and timely information.
