20555 Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206 Proposed Change Nos. 76 and 126 to the Technical Specifications San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated March 9, 1984 you requested additional information regarding Proposed Change Nos. 76 and 126. This information is included as to this letter. Since modifications to the proposed change were necessary as a result of your request for additional information, Enclosure 2 contains portions of the proposed change which incorporate these modifications. Also, an additional modification, discussed below, has been included in the revised proposed change.

Due to the approach of end-of-service life of DC Battery Bank No. 1, appropriate actions for replacement of this battery are underway.

The schedule for installation is prior to startup. For this reason, Proposed Change No. 126 has been reviewed to determine if the proposed specifications reflect the parameters of the replacement No. 1 battery., The new battery will be considerably larger than the existing one, and it will be lead-calcium rather than lead-antimony. Due to the increased size, the charging current for the new battery will be increased to approximately 750 amperes.

Therefore, Proposed Specification 4.4.D.2.c(4) has been revised to require the battery charger for 125 volt DC Bus No. 1 to supply at least 800 amps DC (as opposed to 500 amps DC) at 130 volts DC for at least 8 hours9.259259e-5 days
0.00222 hours
1.322751e-5 weeks
3.044e-6 months
.

The other parameters of the Technical Specifications are compatible with the characteristics of the replacement battery.

If you have any questions or desire additional information, please let me know.

Very truly yours, PDRADoCKZ z
