REVISION OF SCHEDULE FOR THE CONDUCT OF REVIEW OF THE GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION (TAC NO. ME 7493)

Dear Mr. Perito:

Enclosed is a revised schedule for the review of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS),

license renewal application (LRA). The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff)

LRA acceptance letter dated December 16, 2011, noted that the LRA did not provide sufficient plant-specific information in the program descriptions for aging management programs (AMPs) where you claim consistency with the Generic Aging Lesson Learned (GALL) Report recommendations and that the staff would need to verify the changes resulting from the pending extended power up rate (EPU) amendment, the outcome of which was indeterminate at that time. The letter also noted that the lack of sufficient plant-specific information and the pending EPU amendment would likely challenge staff resources. In the course of the GGNS safety review, the staff has required additional resources during audits and in preparation of requests for additional information (RAls) to verify AMP consistency and to verify changes resulting from your recently-approved EPU amendment. Therefore, the staff's safety review schedule has been revised to account for the need to process additional RAls beyond what is expected and the need to issue a greater number than expected of followup RAls based on the quality of initial responses.

Additionally. the staff noted in its letter to you dated August 28,2012, that additional followup RAls related to severe accident mitigation alternatives were needed. As discussed with Mr. Buckley of your staff. a mutually agreeable date for the response is within 45 days from the letter dated August 28, 2012. The staff has extended the environmental review schedule to accommodate review of your responses to these followup RAls. Furthermore, the final licensing decision has been revised to a to-be-determined status pending resolution of the Commission direction on waste confidence.
