Viktoria Mitlyng (630) 829-9662 E-Mail: OPA3 @nrc.gov Jan Strasma (630) 829-9663 NRC NAMES NEW RESIDENT INSPECTOR AT PALISADES NUCLEAR POWER PLANT The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has selected April Scarbeary as the new resident inspector at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant at Covert, Mich., about 5 miles south of South Haven. The facility is operated by Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc.

Each commercial nuclear power plant site in the United States has at least two resident inspectors who monitor day-to-day operations at the plant. Scarbeary joins Senior NRC Resident Inspector Thomas Taylor at the Palisades facility.

She is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelors degree in Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering. During her undergraduate studies, she interned with Exelon Nuclear at the LaSalle County Station and worked as a student research assistant in the Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security program.

Scarbearys background, training, and experience will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants, said Cynthia Pederson, Acting Regional Administrator for NRC Region III.

Since joining the NRC, she has completed a rigorous inspector qualification program as well as the agencys Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program as a member of the Class of 2010.

While working as a reactor engineer in the NRCs Region III office, April participated in baseline, special and region-based team inspections and assisted resident inspectors on-site at the nuclear power plants. She completed multiple rotations and acting assignments as a Resident Inspector at the LaSalle County and Clinton Nuclear Plants during her tenure as a reactor engineer.

April also completed a rotation as a Security Risk Analyst at the NRC Headquarters Office of Nuclear Security and Incident Response.

The resident inspectors have an office at the Palisades plant and can be reached by telephone at 269/764-8971.
