NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS TO MEET IN BETHESDA, MD, JULY 7-8 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards has scheduled a technical meeting July 7-8 in Bethesda, Maryland.

(ACRS meeting schedules are subject to change. Anyone planning to attend should confirm the schedule the day before the meeting by calling 301/492-4516.)

Although meetings of the ACRS are open to the public, they are not part of the NRC's public hearing process. The ACRS, an advisory group to the Commission, conducts independent highly technical reviews of safety considerations related to nuclear facilities. While members of the public may attend the meeting, the committee will consider only oral or written statements limited to specific matters set forth in a Notice of Meeting published in the Federal Register on June 24.

On Thursday, July 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m., the ACRS chairman will make opening remarks regarding the meeting.

From 8:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m., the committee will meet with the NRC's Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to discuss items of mutual interest.

From 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff and the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) to discuss details of a NAS proposal, which was submitted in response to an NRC request-for-proposal, to conduct a workshop and perform a study on the use of digital instrumentation and control systems at nuclear power plants.

From 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss a proposed resolution of a generic safety issue that deals with potential embrittlement of reactor vessel support structures resulting from neutron irradiation damage.

From 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the committee will meet with representatives of the NRC staff to discuss an implementation plan for probability risk assessment.

From 3:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., the committee will discuss matters related to the conduct of ACRS business.

From 4:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the committee will discuss future ACRS activities.

From 5:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., the committee will discuss responses from the NRC Executive Director for Operations to recent ACRS recommendations.

From 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the committee will discuss proposed ACRS reports to the NRC.

On Friday, July 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 8:35 a.m., the ACRS chairman will make opening remarks.

From 8:35 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., the committee will discuss proposed ACRS reports.

From 3:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., the committee will discuss ACRS subcommittee activities.

The meeting may include closed sessions, if required, to discuss proprietary information.

Persons wishing to submit statements regarding the agenda may do so by providing a readily reproducible copy to the committee or by mailing it to the Executive Director, Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, D.C. 20555.

(NOTE TO EDITORS: The use of self-contained tape recorders in the meeting room is permitted during open portions of the meeting when a transcript is being kept. The use of still, motion picture and television cameras, the physical installation and presence of which will not interfere with the course of the meeting, will be permitted both before and after the meeting, during any recess, and--at the discretion of the committee chairman--while the meeting is in session.)
