Dear Mr. Sieber:

SUBJECT: BEAVER VALLEY UNIT 2 - FOLLOW-UP ACTIONS ON ANNUNCIATOR CABINET FIRE OF 1/28/88 (TAC NO. 67611)

As a result of the Beaver Valley Unit 2 annunciator cabinet fire of January 78, 1988, NRC has taken a number of steps to try to better understand the cause of the fire, and evaluate possible corrective actions. Among these were a meeting with your staff and others held on March 3,1988 and a special safety inspection conducted by our Region I office (Inspection Report 50-412/88-03).

The purpose of this letter is to request information for us to resolve remaining concerns regarding this fire. Specifically, the following issues should be addressed:

(1) Any significant findings identified during the course of your on-going investigation of the fire.

(2) Corrective actions taken or planned to be taken to increase your level of confidence in the reliability of the suspect printed circuit boards and associated solid-state components.

(3) Your conclusions pertaining to similar control systems in service at your facility, especially those control systems that can inadvertently operate at high temperature conditions which could lead to other potential fire hazards.

Please respond within 45 days of receipt of this letter.

If you need clarification, please feel free to call.

The recordkeeping/ reporting requirements of this request affects fewer than ten respondents; therefore, OMB clearance is not required under P.L.96-511.

Sincerely, original signed by Peter S. Tam, Project Manager Project Directorate I-4 Divisico of Reactor Projects I/II Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
