Description of Particular Event or Circumstance:
The motor which drives one of the four Residual Heat Removal (RER)
purpo failed on December 16 during operation in the shutdown ecoling mode.. Initial investigation determined that the sheet metal air diffuser in the motor had failed from fatigue crackug originating near the anchor bolt holes. Fragments of the air diffuser cauced shorting of the motor vindings.
Inspection of the remaining RER cotors disclosed two additional air diffusers with' cracks initiated.
Severity of the cracks was proportional to the operating hours (177 to 1300 hours0.015 days <br />0.361 hours <br />0.00215 weeks <br />4.9465e-4 months <br />) on the motors.
