s ATTACHMENT SUPPLEMENTARY SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT PUBLIC SERVICE ELECTRIC AND GAS COMPANY HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION MATERIALS APPLICATION SECTION

- MATERIALS ENGINEERING BRANCH Section 6.2.7 Fracture Prevention of Containment Pressure Boundary In our previous input to this section of the Hope Creek SER, we indicated that all ferritic components in t.he Hope Creek containment pressure boundary, except for 24 in, check valves (1F074 A and B), have sufficient fracture .,

to,ughness to meet GDC-51. To provide reasonable assurance that these .

valu'es will comply with GDC-51, we indicated that the applicant must commit to an augmented ISI program. The SER indicated that the oute,r and inner

- valve body surface must be inspected at the first refueling outage and at C_;., other times when the valve is disassembled for maintenance. The applicant

! in a letter dated March 12, 1985 indicates that the inspection program will be implemented at the first refueling' outage and will include inspection of the entire surface of the valve bodies, both internal and external, by' surface or other examinations acceptable to the staff. A more detailed program would.

be p.rovided when the licensee submits its ISI Program for Hope Creek, which is scheduled for submittal for staff review six months after commercial operation. Based on these commitments ,we have concluded that there is reasonable assurance these valves will comply with the requirements of GDC 51.
