Dear Mr. Cordaro:

Enclosed is a National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Marine Mammal and Marine Turtle Stranding Report for a dead California sea lion (Zalophus californianus)discovered in the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) intake structure. The sea lion was discovered by an Intake Operator on October 25, 2007 floating in the Unit-2 fish escape forebay.

As authorized in a letter dated June 3, 1994 from NMFS, DCPP staff removed the dead sea lion from the intake structure and towed it out to sea. The sea lion was estimated to be about four feet in length. The animal was partially decomposed, and the front part of the head was missing. This could be due to normal decomposition. There were no'obvious indications of the cause of death, nor indications that power plant operations were a contributing factor.

Verbal notification of this incident was reported to NMFS on October 25, 2007 as soon as DCPP Environmental Operations personnel confirmed the sea lion was in the plant intake forebay.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the enclosed repb'rt, or require additional information, please contact Jim Kelly of my staff at (805) 545-3194.

Since ely, James R. Becker Vice President- Diablo Canyon Operationsand Station Director 2007553/jlk/kmo Enclosure (1)
