Crystal River Unit 3 - Sea Turtle Injury Report

Dear Sir:

In the Biological Opinion, issued August 8, 2002 by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries), terms and conditions required that if any listed species are apparently injured in the Crystal River Energy Complex intake canal or the bar racks, a report summarizing the incident must be provided to NOAA Fisheries within 30 days of the incident.

On July 22, 2005, at approximately 06:30, an injured Loggerhead sea turtle (Carettacaretta) was recovered from the Crystal River Unit 3 (CR-3) bar racks. The turtle .was transferred to the Crystal River Mariculture Center for initial evaluation by facility biologists. On the afternoon of July 22, the Loggerhead sea turtle was transferred to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium for treatment of its injuries and a more complete physical evaluation. On August 4, it was concluded that some of the injuries were likely caused by the turtle scraping against the CR-3 bar racks. At this time, the Loggerhead is still at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium undergoing care and rehabilitation.

If you have any questions regarding this submittal, please contact Mr. Lee Hughes, Environmental and Chemistry at (352) 563-4715.
